SERENDIPITY ORGANICS
Clothing and the concept
of being "organic" is a complex combination with many definitions.
To Serendipity, being organic means ensuring that the clothes we bring
to market can be bought by our customers and used by consumers with a
clear conscience with regards to:
1) Our products are not harmful to human skin.
2) Our products have been produced under environmentally sound
conditions.
In addition to striving to be as organic as we possibly can, we also
wish to maintain a high ethical standard when conducting our business
so that
3) The human efforts put into the production of our clothes have not
compromised the safety or human rights of the people involved.
As an ongoing process we are continuously working together with our
suppliers to obtain relevant certifications to ensure the above - as
your guarantee. We take one step at the time as it is a both time
consuming and costly process, but our aim is to be an active partner in
developing and setting high standards.
Serendipity
Certification standards
All Serendipity cotton styles - both woven and knitted - are as a
minimum made from 100% organic cotton yarns that is Control Union
certified. Most of our woven fabrics; prints and solid blues, are also
fully Control Union certified.
Furthermore, we are very pleased to be able to say that all our knitted
garments (rib, jersey, velour), broderie anglaise and corduroy are now
also Fair Trade certified (SA 8000) and Control Union (SKAL) certified
in full finish.
To obtain colourful and fashionable designs still with respect for
nature and our skin, Serendipity employs low-impact dyes.
Finally, we should point out that our silk and wool styles are
presently made from 100% pure, but conventional silk- and wool yarns -
but that will change too…
Production
All Serendipity cotton styles are produced in India, where the
certified organic cotton we use is also grown. This means the entire
production from growth of cotton and production of textiles to the
finished style is produced in one area to avoid excess transportation.
For transportation out of India our clothes are simply packed and not
treated with chemicals for sustainability. Due to the fact that a 6
weeks long sea trip in a sealed container could damage clothing not
treated for such conditions, we have to transport the clothes by air.
This is unfortunately not a very energy-efficient means of
transportation, but we have in this instance chosen what we believe to
be the "least" harmful.
Our Silk and Wool styles are produced in China from 100% pure but
conventional yarns. We maintain a similar relationship with our Chinese
suppliers as with Indian suppliers with regards to being "organic" and
working with a high ethical standard but yarns are conventional
– a very important "detail" that hopefully will change too in
the near future.
Certifications
- what does it mean?
A large number of organisations set standards for ensuring defined
criteria are met and issue certificates as your guarantee. The below
standards are the ones we have chosen to comply with in our pursuit of
making Serendipity truly organic and maintaining a high ethical
standard.
Control Union
Certification (Former SKAL)
Control Union is currently one of the strictest internationally
recognised certifications for organic practise. This means that the
cotton plants are grown on fields without use of fertilizers or
pesticides, and our spinning mill partners work according to a number
of strict criteria in regards to production procedures, use of
additives etc.
Global
Organic Textile Standard, GOTS
GOTS is a new Global standard for organic textiles that has been
established to make a common standard that can be recognised and
applied to globally.
Being Control Union Certified you more than fully comply with the new
Global Organic Textile Standard, GOTS.
In the coming years, GOTS is expected to replace Control Union
Certifications in most areas. GOTS also includes many of the criteria
set forward in Fair Trade SA8000.
Low Impact Dye
Low-impact dying means employing a dye-process free of AZO colours,
formaldehydes and heavy metals. It helps keep chemicals/metals out of
our soil and away from our skin.
Fair Trade
SA8000
SA8000 is an international standard for improving work conditions,
based on the principles of thirteen human rights conventions. This
includes ongoing auditing of work places to ensure a number of criteria
are adhered to regarding child labour, health and safety,
discrimination, disciplinary practise, working hours, wages etc.
